Future Learning Goals
“My Route to Continued Learning and Leadership”
During my time as an educator and as a member of Michigan State's Educational Technology program and community my goals have evolved a great deal. My goals developed greatly during my masters coursework and I have realized that they are life long goals. Like all life long goals they require continued dedication and persistence. The overall focus of my goals is being an educational leader. By following through with my goals below I will achieve my lifelong goal of being an educational leader. To be an effective leader one must be well informed of changes in education. One must be willing to step into leadership positions and share knowledge of successes and failure with peers and colleagues. Lastly to be an educational leader one must be committed to being a lifelong learner. By achieving and completing these goals I will achieve my lifelong goal of being an educational leader.
Part of being an effective leader means staying ahead of the curve. Leaders must be well informed in their area of expertise and field of study. This requires leaders to remain active in the discussions that their peers and colleagues are participating in. To stay informed one must maintain an information diet that supports and stimulates continued and improved understanding in educational technology as well as education in general. Edutopia is a great source of information for maintaining a broad information diet in the field of education. Another great source of information is on twitter. Using hashtags such as #MAET, #EdChat, and #MakerEd is a fantastic way to remain informed on current education related topics as well as formulate a professional network of peers. It is my goal to stay informed and remain active in these discussions so that I can continue to be an informed leader.
Leadership requires leading. One must step into leadership roles and effect change. It is my goal to continue to taking on leadership opportunities in my own district as well as in the greater educational technology community. I plan to continue taking on additional responsibilities in my own district such as continuing to head the high school building technology committee. On a larger scale I want to participate as a presenter at a future Michigan Association for Computer Users in Education (MACUL) conference. Being a leader involves taking risks and sharing your ideas and participating in peer review. By participating in these leadership roles I will step into leadership positions and share knowledge of successes and failure with peers and colleagues.
Being an educational leader requires lifelong commitment. One must must accept that they will always be a student. To be a student one must be humble and willing to recognize that there is always something new to learn or improve upon. After completing Michigan State’s Educational Technology program I want to continue my learning and progression as a student. I want to continue to refine my thinking and strategies for overcoming problems with solutions. It is my goal to continue my academic studies to refine my thinking and understanding of educational technology. I plan to accomplish this goal by participating in a future Michigan State Educational Technology Refresher course. Having the opportunity to work with peers who have taken the lessons from their masters studies and applied to to the real world is an amazing opportunity. Learning the strategies, tools, and techniques that my peers have used in this academic setting proves great conversations to bring back to my own educational community. Part of being a leader is is the continued commitment to being a lifelong learner.
